Flemingo international, a global duty free and travel retail operator has opened its duty free stores at the arrival and departure lounge at the International airport of Salvador Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Brazil. Flemingo won the concession to operate duty free stores last year for a period of ten years and the total sales value is estimated to be in excess of $200 million USD.
The operation covers a total space of over 700 SQ M and has core and other duty free categories including electronics, gifts, accessories, sunglasses, watches, etc catering to different tastes and budgets. The majority of the international passengers traveling to this 3rd most populous city are Brazilians who have a huge propensity to spend. The city is well placed for tourism growth given the world UNESCO heritage site tag, many other tourist attractions as well as the entry of new airlines and new travel routes, with it being one of the host cities for world cup and the forthcoming Olympics.
Flemingo has invested over $3 million in this project to deliver high standards of retail and has focused all its efforts in creating a world class store complimenting the location and beauty of Salvador and giving it a sense of place.
Flemingo an emerging market specialist sees LATAM as an ideal opportunity for expanding not just with duty free, but convenience as well as food & beverage as well in all travel retail channels. Brazil in particular is seeing major investment in airports and with booming passenger numbers, there is opportunity as retail and catering standards improve.
